The Associated Press reports that January 6 violent insurrectionist Patrick McCaughey III, who used a shield that he stole to crush Metropolitan Police Department officer Daniel Hodges in a doorway, was sentenced to more than 7 years in prison today. McCaughey was one of the most violent of the Trumpist rioters that day, a fact that prompted prosecutors to recommend a 15 year sentence. According to Federal District Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee:
"The judge described McCaughey, 25, as a 'poster child of all that was dangerous and appalling about' the Jan. 6, 2021, riot.
'Your actions are some of the most egregious crimes that were committed on that dark day,' the judge told McCaughey." (our emphasis)
McCaughey appeared to be regretful that he listened to the Malignant Loser's Big Lie, saying at sentencing:
“I’m sorry that I conducted myself less like a citizen and more like an animal that day,” he said.
Of course, the animal trainer remains at large for now, and McCaughey's attorneys noted that he's still peddling the Big Lie:
"They said McCaughey’s 'reprehensible' actions were motivated by his 'misunderstanding' about the 2020 presidential election. Trump, the Republican incumbent, falsely claimed that Democrats stole the election from him.
'There remain many grifters out there who remain free to continue propagating the "great lie" that Trump won the election, Donald Trump being among the most prominent. Mr. McCaughey is not one of these individuals; he knows he was wrong,' his lawyers wrote." (our emphasis)
McCaughey has lots of time to contemplate what following the Malignant Loser has cost him.
