Just days after he voted to expel three Democratic state representatives for supporting gun safety measures in Tennessee, Republican leader Rep. Scotty "Sexy Scotty" Campbell resigned hours after being accused of sexually abusing at least one intern by an ethics committee, according to WTVF in Nashville, which broke the story:
"About six hours after being confronted by NewsChannel 5 Investigates, Rep. Scotty Campbell gave up his seat in the Tennessee General Assembly.
Until now, Campbell, who served as vice chair of the House Republican Caucus and who recently voted to expel three Democrats who engaged in a gun violence protest on the House floor, had suffered no previous consequences as a result of his actions.
Despite accusations of sometimes extremely vulgar comments and other inappropriate advances, Republicans did not remove the 39-year-old East Tennessee lawmaker from his leadership position nor from his committee assignments." (our emphasis)
They didn't remove him? We're shocked, shocked ! that the good ol' boys and girls of the lily white Republican caucus ignored the accusations against Scotty. It was only after the news broke of the ethics committee's action that Campbell took himself out. He's also cost the taxpayer plenty because of his actions:
"NewsChannel 5 has learned that potentially thousands of dollars have been spent to protect one victim, relocating her from the downtown apartment building where she and Campbell both had apartments, shipping her furniture back home in another part of the state and placing her in a downtown hotel for the remainder of her internship.
Legislative officials refused to say how much they've paid out, saying that information is confidential." (our emphasis)
If the Republican legislators don't make Campbell personally reimburse the state for those expenses, the voters should vote them the hell out. More on the abusive Campbell:
"A self-described promoter, he gained national attention earlier this year when, during debate over a bill banning drag shows in public places, he asked if that legislation would also prohibit a 'bra-and-panties match' by wrestlers at a county fair.
He voted to expel the so-called Tennessee Three arguing, 'If you were in court and behaved like those three did, you would have been found in contempt of court.'" (our emphasis)
Scotty was just asking for a friend about those "bra-and-panties" matches. Yep.
If the Tennessee Three behaved like Scotty did, they might have found themselves in jail if it were up to his fellow Republicans.
