A Losing DeSantis Is Florida's Pain

In a powerful opinion column in the South Florida SunSentinal, journalist Fred Grimm lays into Florida's  failing Presidential hopeful Governor Ron "Bootsie" DeSantis, and speculates how bad things will get for the people there once DeSantis returns defeated, bitter and ready to double down on his cruel policies. Excerpts:

"Bad news dogs the presidential campaign of Ron DeSantis. That’s very bad news for the folks back home.

Life in Florida becomes so less fraught with the governor occupied elsewhere. We’d rather he was still hustling votes in some other state then sulking around Tallahassee in a loser’s funk. [snip]

Somehow, DeSantis has failed — so far — to captivate Republican voters despite his relentless exploitation of crafted-for-MAGA issues like race, abortion, immigration, guns, gender dysphoria, gay rights, drag queens, the Disney Company.

This lowdown stuff was supposed to win over ultra-conservative Republican voters and portray DeSantis as a bare-knuckle brawler who could be as much a tough guy as Trump, but without the distractions of Stormy Daniels or those moldering boxes of classified documents.

Yet, MAGA voters still prefer Donald Trump and his carnival barker charisma. His 37-count federal indictment last month boosted his standing among Republican voters by five points, according to an NBC News poll. Poor Ron sold his soul for nothing.

It must seem so unfair to the governor. After all, he could have hardly been any meaner to transgender children or immigrant workers or Black voters. He even signed a flurry of death warrants, knowing how the Republican base loves executions."  (our emphasis)

On nearly every issue, DeSantis has veered to the right of his cult party's leader, hoping to arouse the mouth breathing base into supporting him. No fight is beneath him, and the nastier and more demagogic it is, the better for Bootsie. With his defeat in the Republican / Forced Birth / White Supremacist party primaries all but inevitable, Florida needs to brace for his return and governance for a bad four years.
