DOJ To Abbott: Remove River Barriers

The Department of Justice is getting ready to file a legal action against the State of Texas for placing a floating barrier in the Rio Grande river, according to a CNN report. Texas Governor and immigrant abuser Greg Abbott (Secession - TX) in a letter from the Department that placing those barriers in the river "violate federal law, raise humanitarian concerns, present serious risks to public safety and the environment, and may interfere with the federal government’s ability to carry out its official duties." There have been reports in addition that Texas border authorities have been denying water to women and children crossing the border in record heat, and have physically pushed them back into the river. The Department of Justice is also looking into those activities as potential Federal law violations.

The Mexican government has also expressed opposition to the floating barriers as violations of 1944 and 1970 treaties on the border and waterways.

With his latest border stunt, Abbott wants his constituents to believe he has the legal authority to enforce international borders, which is the role of the Federal Government. His inhumane treatment of families crossing the border is an example of the "cruelty is the point" mindset of right-wing, MAGAt politicians. Much as they lie about floods of unlawful crossings, the fact is that unlawful border crossings are down this year as a result of Biden Administration policies regarding asylum, which requires immigrants to first seek asylum in countries that they travelled through.
