The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

The good:

"In the past nine days, state and federal judges threw out two congressional maps — and helped Democrats avoid a worst-case scenario in Ohio — kicking off an unusually busy redistricting calendar heading into the election year.

All told, a dozen or more seats across at least six states could be redrawn, increasing the likelihood Democrats could chip away the five-seat GOP House majority through redistricting alone.

Democrats could pick up an extra seat in each of a handful of states, including Florida, Alabama and Louisiana, and perhaps several more in New York. Republicans could still pick up as many as four seats in North Carolina, but the recent rulings put Democrats in a position to offset those losses — and then some."

It's not only about potential new Dem seats, it's about defeating the Republican / Forced Birth / Shooters party's long term project of gerrymandering themselves into a majority in the House while losing the popular vote.

The bad:

"The massive manhunt for the convicted killer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison stretched into a 12th day Monday after he slipped past a police perimeter over the weekend, stole a van, changed his appearance and tried to contact past acquaintances, authorities said.

The search for Danelo Cavalcante, 34, shifted dramatically over the weekend after he was spotted more than 20 miles from where police were looking – signaling he had somehow gotten past the hundreds of officers searching in and around Longwood Gardens, about 35 miles west of Philadelphia, where he had been spotted several times in recent days.

Cavalcante on Saturday evening stole a 2020 Ford Transit van about three-quarters of a mile from the search perimeter and traveled to the East Pikeland Township home of an acquaintance he’d known several years ago, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said in a Sunday news conference."

They had him in a relatively small perimeter, and he was spotted on numerous security cameras, but he managed to elude the police, change his appearance and steal a vehicle. Lots of questions.

The ugly:

Mel Tucker has been suspended as the active coach of Michigan State football less than 24 hours after it was revealed he is the subject of an MSU Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, the university announced Sunday. Tucker is on leave without pay pending the outcome of the MSU's investigation with his future leading the Spartans now in doubt. [snip]

A complaint filed in December 2022 by Brenda Tracy, a prominent rape survivor and activist against sexual violence, accused Tucker of making sexually suggestive comments and masturbating while she "sat frozen for several minutes" during a phone call on April 28, 2022.

Tracy, who shared the details of the complaint with USA Today, visited MSU at least three times as an activist starting in 2021 -- including once in which she was recognized as an honorary captain at a Michigan State spring football game -- and built a relationship with Tucker as part of her work on campus.

Tracy also alleges numerous other inappropriate incidents.

'The idea that someone could know me and say they understand my trauma but then re-inflict that trauma on me is so disgusting to me, it's hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,' Tracy told USA Today. 'It's like he sought me out just to betray me'"

Tucker has denied the charges, but this is another case of "believe the woman," with a man in a position of power feeling entitled to harass a female employee or subordinate, especially in the testosterone-fueled world of sports. The fact that it's a betrayal of a rape survivor makes it even more ugly.
