Jason Quever is the person behind (and in front) of the California indie band Papercuts, which we've featured in the past. He wrote and performed all the songs on the 2022 album "Past Life Regression," from which we offer the single "The Lodger" today. Amy Marco provides backup vocals, but otherwise its all Quever. The music has shades of the psychedelic folk-pop of groups like The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane and Echo & The Bunnymen.
Our second song is in recognition of what would have been the 81st (!) birthday today of the great Janis Joplin. It's a song from her breakthrough performance at the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival, "Ball and Chain." The video is from D.A. Pennebaker's film "Monterey Pop," and is actually the second time Joplin and Big Brother and The Holding Company performed the song at the festival:
Big Brother's scheduled [Saturday] set was not filmed because of a disagreement. However, due to the huge reaction the band got, they were asked to return to play two songs on Sunday, to be filmed specifically for the movie.
Of course, the "huge reaction" was for Joplin's electrifying performance that catapulted her to stardom. Hope you enjoy.
