Registrations Surge After Harris Enters Race

Over 100,000 new voters have been registered to vote in the past week since President Biden stepped aside and V.P. Harris became the presumptive Dem nominee, as Commondreams.org reports:

"The group behind a popular get-out-the-vote technology platform said Friday that it's registered more than 100,000 new U.S. voters since President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, a surge that came amid mounting Republican efforts to make it harder to register and vote.

Vote.org said that 84% of voters registered in the new wave are under age 35. Nearly 1 in 5 new registrees is 18 years old. Andrea Hailey, the group's CEO, said that 'since 2020, we have led the largest voter registration drive in U.S. history,' with more than 7.8 million people registered."  (our emphasis)

In addition to the new registrations, more than 170,000 volunteers have signed up for the Harris for President campaign in a number of key states, and fundraising for the Vice President's campaign is setting records.

Meanwhile, MAGA Republicans are working hard to limit voter access to the ballot box, knowing that the higher the voter participation, the worse it is for them. Their "Safeguard American Voter Eligibility" Act is an attempt to suppress legitimate voters by requiring "proof of citizenship" to vote, a classic solution in search of a problem. The bill will go nowhere, but it shows their cynical and undemocratic attempt to fix elections.
