My mother was badly paralyzed by polio when I was one (1948), I grew up doing my part in taking care of her. I vividly remember being maybe 11 and wheeling her in a wheelchair a couple of blocks to the polling station, parking her chair in the booth, throwing the arm over that closed the curtains and pulling the toggles for her vote at her direction.
We were a liberal family in Louisville, KY; later when I was 13, my father got our black handyman, Sam Thompson ,representation from the KCLU and justice from SCOTUS in an early landmark civil rights case:
