Today in 1954, the first mass inoculation for polio with the Salk vaccine occurred at the Arsenal School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Jonas Salk achieved the breakthrough on polio after the disease had ravaged the U.S., forcing many into "iron lungs" to breathe, and requiring survivors to wear braces to be able to walk. Today, we have at the head of the Department of Health and Human Services an unfit conspiracy monger who has spread disinformation about vaccines, including the Salk vaccine.
Dr. Salk's quote from 1977 upon receiving the Nehru award resonates today, as wisdom and good will are lacking in this nation and in the dangerous regime running the Federal Government.
"Neither wisdom nor good will is now dominant. Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality."
