"A Damning Indictment"

The cultish portion of the public that continues to support the deranged Malignant Fascist won't quit him no matter what outrages he commits, even toward them.  The MF saw this phenomenon when he commented back in 2015 that he could "stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters."  His angry, ill-informed and largely white following have coalesced around a narcissistic demagogue who shares their sense of victimhood and grievance, but not their aspirations, concerns, and religious beliefs which he falsely trades on.  Salon.com's Chauncey Devega writes in his introduction to his interview of Robert P. Jones of the Public Religion Research Institute, noting that the MF's strongest support is among the evangelical / Christofascist population:

"The American people remain in a deep slumber and state of learned helplessness as Donald Trump and his forces continue with the shock and awe campaign against American democracy, civil society, the rule of law, the Constitution and human decency. The mainstream news media as an institution appears to have chosen a strategy of anticipatory obedience and compliance, if not collaboration, in normalizing Trumpism and his attempts to become the country’s first elected dictator. The Democratic Party is mired in infighting and a perpetual post-mortem about how and why it was routed by Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans in the 2024 election. The concept of how to be an effective opposition party seems outside the grasp of its leaders.

Pro-democracy civil society organizations and the courts are trying to resist Trump’s attempts to neutralize them. Unfortunately, Donald Trump has great leverage in such a struggle and is using the near-limitless resources of the State to impose his will. For example, while the courts have repeatedly ordered a halt or pause on the Trump administration’s actions, it has and continues to treat such orders and rulings as optional, rather than as the commands of a co-equal branch of government, per the Constitution.

Donald Trump was democratically elected. By choosing him over President Biden and then Vice President Kamala Harris, a majority of voters endorsed Donald Trump’s values, character, behavior and public aspirations to be a dictator on 'day one'. This is a damning indictment." [snip]

....polling by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) has consistently shown that white right-wing Christians are the bedrock of Donald Trump’s support. This level of devotion gives Trump a great amount of power and flexibility in his quest for unlimited power because unlike his predecessors, he has a cult-like following that he can use to claim democratic legitimacy combined with autocratic powers and a willingness to shatter America’s political and societal institutions to achieve his personal and political goals." (our emphasis)

To be sure, there is no public policy solution in the MF's mind, only how he can capitalize on his position and punish his "enemies." His cult will never see that as they follow him blindly, some to their own destruction.

Death, DOGE, And Deranged

Stephen Colbert hilariously covers three deranged Republican MAGAt cranks:  the execrable Sen. Joni "We all die" Ernst (MAGA-IA) doubling down on her soulless comments about Medicaid cuts;  drug- addled Elon "Leon" Musk whose "steaming pile of public service" has ended (for now); and ΓΌber crank Malignant Fascist endorsing a beyond- crazy conspiracy theory about Joe Biden.  These are the "leaders" the wise voters of America have put into power.  That's the unfunny part.

QOTD: "A Setting of Rage, Threat And Damage"

A must read is Michael Shaw's chilling and perceptive look at the Malignant Fascist's use of the Oval Office as a trap for foreign dignitaries and media alike.  Looking at his use of the office as a trap for bullying visitors, to the wannabe dictator decorations, to his use of the office to feed his narcissistic neediness, Shaw captures it.  The final paragraphs of his article:

"[Trump's] narcissism explains the one element countless articles about the decor of the Oval Office have consistently missed. The entry doors now feature gilded Rococo mirrors affixed to their backs, serving the dual purpose of allowing dear leader to bask in his reflection while creating a 'hall of mirrors' effect to further disorient his victims.

In his first round as president, Trump figured out how to use the echo chamber of social media to gaslight us virtually 24/7. This time, he has leveraged the power of the right and his previous experience to effect that terror in physical terms. The Oval Office is both a setting of rage, threat, and damage and ground zero for his assault on democracy and the collective psyche.

The Oval Office has become a manifestation of Trump’s ultimate goal: not just to dominate his prey, but to shackle us all in the merciless chambers of his diseased mind." (our emphasis)

It's a brilliant analysis of the MF's transformation of the Oval Office into his public torture chamber and place to strut and dominate as the all-powerful leader.

"What Trump & Company Are Counting On"

The Guardian's Margaret Sullivan explains the motivation behind the Malignant Fascist's attacks on our national parks, cultural centers and other places where Americans find enriching experiences:

'The author and environmentalist Wallace Stegner called our national parks 'America’s best idea'.

Certainly, these jewels – 85m acres of parkland throughout all the 50 states – are beloved by the public. So are America’s public libraries, arts organizations and museums.

But that hasn’t stopped the Trump administration from threatening or harming them.

These institutions are under siege. They are hurt by deep funding cuts, the loss or bullying of public employees and, in some cases, by threats of extinction.

Why would any politician – especially one as hungry for adulation as Donald Trump – go after such cherished parts of America?

It seems counterintuitive, but this is all a part of a broad plan that the great 20th century political thinker Hannah Arendt would have understood all too well.

Take away natural beauty, free access to books and support for the arts, and you end up with a less enlightened, more ignorant and less engaged public. That’s a public much more easily manipulated.

'A people that can no longer believe in anything cannot make up its mind,' said Arendt, a student of authoritarianism, in 1973. Eventually, such a public 'is deprived … of its ability to think and judge', and with people like that, 'you can then do what you please'.

That’s what Trump and company are counting on."  (our emphasis)

The fascist mentality is all about brutishness and denial of aesthetics that don't serve the regime.  A public that is denied the majesty of our national parks, museums and public libraries is far easier to manipulate and form into a cult, as Arendt suggests.  That's the motive behind the MF regime's attacks on what makes us whole and stronger as human beings.

Bellhop JD Vance is taking notes and heaping praise on his cult leader, whom he hopes to succeed.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

When NPR sued Donald Trump Tuesday, it had an easy argument to go with. Normally, in First Amendment retaliation cases against the government, you have to pull together a bunch of disparate strands to prove the retaliatory intent of the actions. But as NPR noted in its filing, and as Justice Scalia once wrote about obvious constitutional violations: “this wolf comes as a wolf.” Trump’s executive order cutting public media funding doesn’t even pretend to hide its retaliatory nature — it literally calls NPR and PBS “biased media” in the title.

Republicans have been gunning for public media for decades, but historically, every time Congress tries to cut funding, outcry from their constituents is so overwhelming that nothing ever happens. It turns out tons of people (including Republican voters) actually like NPR and PBS. But Trump skipped Congress entirely and simply declared that public media wouldn’t be receiving any more federal funding — because he thinks their coverage hurts his feelings.

Federal funding for public media is already a bit confusing because very little of it actually goes directly to NPR and PBS. The funding mostly goes to local affiliates, many of which then do use it to purchase syndicated programming from NPR and PBS.

NPR’s complaint is refreshingly straightforward: this is textbook viewpoint discrimination that violates the First Amendment, separation of powers, and due process. As the lawsuit notes, the Supreme Court made clear just last year (in the Moody v. NetChoice case) that “it is no job for government to decide what counts as the right balance of private expression — to ‘un-bias’ what it thinks biased.”  [snip]

What makes this case so obvious is that Trump hasn’t even tried to hide the retaliatory motive (because he doesn’t realize it’s unconstitutional and doesn’t much care about that)...

In a sane America, the many legal actions brought by the Malignant Fascist, and those brought opposing them, would never have made it to paper, much less into court.  This should be a slam dunk, but ...

The bad:

For some small businesses, the last week brought even more twists and turns to the past two months of President Donald Trump’s chaotic tariffs.

The situation was already confusing, with stops and starts of tariffs at different levels. Then on Wednesday, a US court said Trump overstepped his authority in imposing most of those import levies – only for an appeals court on Thursday to pause the previous court’s ruling.

The confusion has made it challenging for some small companies to plan, business owners told CNN. In certain cases, they have had to consider changing their product strategy, looking into shifting their supply chains, reducing staff hours or delaying products.

“My fear is, if this continues, there’s going to be like the mass extinction of small businesses,” Julie Robbins, CEO of Ohio-based guitar pedal maker EarthQuaker Devices, told CNN.

Trump announced blanket tariffs across the globe on April 2, and since then, his plans have changed on a regular basis.

In early April, he issued a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs almost everywhere except China. Then, after ratcheting up total tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, he declared smartphones and certain other electronics would be exempt from the reciprocal tariffs. The US and China agreed in May to roll back reciprocal tariffs for 90 days. And in late May, he threatened smartphone makers like Apple with 25% tariffs if they don’t make their phones in the US. He also agreed to push back levies on imports from the European Union until July 9.

Those are only some of his changes, which can come at any time of day via the White House, social media posts or other avenues...

With the stinging "TACO" epithet ringing in his head, the Malignant Fascist will be more likely to double down on his destructive tariffs and tariff threats than he will be to back off.  Count on seeing a lot of small businesses -- representing nearly half of the American workforce -- to close as the MF continues to line the pockets of his crime family and associated oligarchs, with more to come should his "Big, Beautiful Bill" pass.

The ugly:

Conservative Karol Nawrocki won Poland’s weekend presidential runoff election, according to the final vote count on Monday. Nawrocki won 50.89% of votes in a very tight race against liberal Warsaw Mayor RafaΕ‚ Trzaskowski, who received 49.11%.

The close race had the country on edge since a first round two weeks earlier and through the night into Monday, revealing deep divisions in the country along the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union.

An early exit poll released Sunday evening suggested Trzaskowski was headed to victory before updated polling began to reverse the picture hours later.

The outcome indicates that Poland can be expected to take a more nationalist path under its new leader, who was backed by U.S. President Donald Trump...

Just when we thought the tide was turning in Europe...  Nawrocki's election will seriously complicate politics in Poland, specifically Prime Minister Donald Tusk's reformist agenda and relations with the EU.

Across The Universe, Cont.

From NASA/ ESA, May 26, 2025: A single member of a galaxy pair takes centre stage in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope Picture of the Week. This beautiful spiral galaxy is NGC 3507, which is situated about 46 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. NGC 3507 is classified as a barred spiral because the galaxy’s sweeping spiral arms emerge from the ends of a central bar of stars rather than the central point of the galaxy.

Though pictured solo here, NGC 3507 actually travels the Universe with a galactic partner named NGC 3501 that is located outside the frame. NGC 3501 was featured in a previous Picture of the Week. While NGC 3507 is a quintessential galactic pinwheel, its partner resembles a streak of quicksilver across the sky. Despite looking completely different, both are spiral galaxies, simply seen from different angles.

For galaxies that are just a few tens of millions of light-years away, like NGC 3507 and NGC 3501, features like spiral arms, dusty gas clouds, and brilliant star clusters are on full display. More distant galaxies appear less detailed. See if you can spot any faraway galaxies in this image: they tend to be orange or yellow and can be anywhere from circular and starlike to narrow and elongated, with hints of spiral arms. Astronomers use instruments called spectrometers to split the light from these distant galaxies to study the nature of these objects in the early Universe.

In addition to these far-flung companions, NGC 3507 is joined by a far nearer object, marked by four spikes of light: a star within the Milky Way, a mere 436 light-years away from Earth.

[Image Description: A spiral galaxy seen face-on. Its centre is crossed by a broad bar of light. A glowing spiral arm extends from each end of this bar, both making almost a full turn through the galaxy’s disc before fading out. The arms contain sparkling blue stars, pink spots of star formation, and dark threads of dust that follow both spiral arms into and across the central bar. A foreground star sits atop the galaxy.]

QOTD -- "Declaration Of Conscience" Anniversary

"Margaret Chase Smith said the 1950 Senate had become a 'rendezvous for vilification, for selfish political gain at the sacrifice of individual reputations and national unity.'

"She railed against the McCarthyite character assassination of the day, but also against the flight from substantive political dialogue.

"Our time, of course, resembles hers. Political language has also been debased and corrupted today. The Fox News propaganda of MAGA politicians is steeped in character assassination, baldfaced lies, petty insults and round-the-clock disinformation.

"This is the hollowing out of political language, which tracks the corruption of government and the disappearance of serious policy debate. These movements of thought are not just part of one politician’s campaign for power. They are in service of a ruling public philosophy, that treats the government as an instrument for class plunder and private self-enrichment, a get-even-filthier-rich-quick scheme for the president and his family and friends.

"But for the battered American public philosophy which insists that the government should be an instrument for the common good of all and the defense of our freedoms and civil rights, the state of politics in the country is a debacle and a serious threat to the survival of democratic institutions and the possibility of democratic progress. This is why people attending Town Hall meetings all over America are furious and inflamed about the grotesque condition of our government and our politics.
..." -- excerpt from Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin's June 1 "Statement on the 75th Anniversary of Senator Margaret Chase Smith's Declaration of Conscience."  (You can read Smith's declaration here (pdf).)  Our times do resemble those dark years, except then we still had a political system with institutional barriers and norms that no longer exist today to limit the power of a lawless, corrupt, fascist, wannabe autocrat.  Because today, you could take all the "consciences" from MAGA Republican politicians and they'd fit inside the navel of a flea with room to spare.

Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Aircraft

Ukrainian drones have destroyed some 40 Russian military aircraft deep inside Russia using a daring and novel approach.  From Associated Press:

"A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia’s territory, a Ukrainian security official told The Associated Press on Sunday, while Russia pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones a day before the two sides meet for a new round of direct talks in Istanbul. [snip]

The operation saw drones transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russian territory, he said. The drones reportedly hit 41 bombers stationed at several airfields on Sunday afternoon, including the Belaya air base in Russia’s Irkutsk region, more than 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from Ukraine." (our emphasis)

The operation shows that Ukraine is exploring every avenue to strike Russian military targets, especially their aircraft, even using clandestine military operations deep inside Russia.  It also reiterates the widespread incompetence of the Russian military and security forces to have let these trucks travel deep into Russian territory and launch their drones without being detected.

Meanwhile Russia launched 472 drones on Sunday against Ukraine, the largest number since their brutal invasion in February 2022.

Sunday Reflection

"Self-culture has been loudly and boastfully proclaimed as sufficient for all our ideals of perfection. But if we listen to the best men and women everywhere ... they will say that science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all — the apathy of human beings." -- Helen Keller (6/27/1880 - 6/1/1968), author, activist for the sight and hearing impaired from her book My Religion (1927).

Keller was described as a suffragist, pacifist, and advocate of family planning. She helped to establish the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920, and was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 for her work on behalf of the blind and deaf.

With Hurricane Season Coming, FEMA Is Shrinking

Today marks the start of hurricane season and this year, under the regime of the Malignant Fascist, the U.S. may be less prepared to handle the impacts than ever, thanks to cuts in budget and staff.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has also predicted more storms in the 2025 season than average.  From the Associated Press:

"Experts are alarmed over the large-scale staff reductions, travel and training restrictions and grant cut-offs since President Donald Trump took office at both the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which prepares for and responds to hurricanes, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which tracks and forecasts them.

'My nightmare is a major catastrophic storm hitting an area that is reeling from the impact of all of this nonsense from the Trump administration and people will die. And that could happen in Florida, that could happen in Texas, that could happen in South Carolina,' said Susan Cutter, the director of the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute at the University of South Carolina. [snip]

About 2,000 full-time staff have left FEMA since Trump took office in January, a loss of roughly one-third of the agency’s full-time workforce, amid Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) mandated cuts. Scholars who study emergency management are concerned by both the reduction in capacity and the 'brain drain' of experienced staff.

'There’s really been a brain drain within FEMA in addition to the loss of overall employees,' said Samantha Montano, who teaches emergency management at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. She noted that many who left were in critical management positions." (our emphasis)

The MF's half-baked idea is to shift responsibility for disaster recovery and costs from FEMA to the States, which, in the case of hurricanes, are heavily MAGAt along the Gulf Coast, and the Atlantic Coast from Florida to North Carolina.  States say they haven't budgeted for major disaster relief.  More from the article:

"The feds often pick up the entire bill in big disasters and most of it in smaller ones. In the Trump administration, disaster declarations have been denied or delayed. When disaster declarations were issued for nine states last week, some had been pending for two months and others were only partially approved.

'We’ve just relied on FEMA for so much for so long and not knowing who’s going to fill the gap and how we’re going to fill it is really scary,' said University at Albany emergency management professor Jeannette Sutton." (our emphasis)

What's even scarier are the MAGAt voters who didn't see this coming from a narcissistic sociopath that they elected on the Project 2025 platform.  Perhaps now they'll connect the dots, but it's a long shot.  FAFO.
