The Rethugs may have stepped into a trap of their own making, especially after President Clinton's masterful take-down of their fibs/fables/falsehoods during the campaign. By most metrics, comparing January 2009 to now is a winner for Dems. The Rethugs were just counting on voter amnesia and having their tall tales accepted as facts.
