As if the Rethuglican / New Confederate Party didn't have enough woes with women, another tool -- this time Georgia Rep.
Phil "Lie Back and Relax" Gingrey -- is coming to the defense of former Rep. Todd "My Ass Is" Akin's comment on "legitimate rape" which sank him in the Missouri Senate race. Lie Back and Relax (who is a former OB/GYN
that was successfully sued for malpractice) says that his former colleague
got it "partly right" when he said a "legitimate" rape victim's body shuts down to prevent pregnancy. Here's the witch Doctor's explanation:
“We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ‘Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.’ So he was partially right wasn’t he?” (our emphasis)
Uh, no Dr. Feelgood, and don't take our word for it; here's what the
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said about it last August:
"A woman who is raped has no control over ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized egg (i.e., pregnancy). To suggest otherwise contradicts basic biological truths."
Meanwhile, every time a Rethug politician babbles about rape, it's a good week for progressives.
