In today's New York Times, there's a report about the Catholic Church's problems in Germany with over 1,000 cases of pedophile priest sexual abuse, largely prior to 1980. While the Church has promised an investigation, they appear to be operating much in the fashion of their American counterparts:
"The church’s credibility regarding its commitment to an impartial investigation suffered a fresh blow last week when the bishops canceled an independent study into the abuse scandal amid allegations by the independent investigator, Christian Pfeiffer, that the church was censoring information."That's not all. The article goes on to describe incidents in two Catholic hospitals in Cologne where a victim of rape was denied a gynecological exam and resources to ensure she wouldn't become pregnant from the rape.
If you want to understand why the Catholic Church, among other large institutions, is suffering from lack of trust, look no further.
