Memory Lane

The London blitz in 1940-41 proved to be a turning point for Great Britain in World War II. When the Royal Air Force rose to meet German bombers and fighters, they succeeded in frustrating an invasion of England. It was, as Churchill said, their "finest hour."

We came across (thanks to the MaddowBlog) a fascinating site -- bombsight.org -- devoted to documenting where the German bombs hit London. This Hackwhacker was curious about the site, since he was in London in the summer of 1970 with an old girlfriend, staying in a bed-and-breakfast on Penywern Road in the Earl's Court/SouthKensington area of the West End. Lo and behold, there's evidence that several German bombs hit near that location in the 1940- 1941 London blitz.

Just an amazing site for lovers of London, and WWII history buffs in general. If you've ever been to London, see the history of where you walked...long after the blitz.
