Victory For Choice in Texas

Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Ft. Worth) yesterday singlehandedly blocked a bill in the Texas Senate that would have effectively banned abortions in Texas.  She did it by filibustering -- standing the whole time without a break -- for almost 11 hours until the deadline for the vote had passed.  For good measure, pro-choice supporters in the Senate gallery and outside the chamber raised their voices in support, so that Rethuglican Lt. Governor David Dewhurst had to suspend debate and admit defeat.  Of course, Dewhurst came up with three phony reasons why Sen. Davis had violated the filibuster procedure in an attempt to silence her, but in the end the Dems -- and women -- won.
