Texas' Rethuglican Railroad Commissioner and latter day John Calhoun, Barry "Rebel Yell" Smitherman, thinks Texas is ready to secede from the Union. Smitherman, who is running for state Attorney General (!!), apparently skipped the chapters in the history books that referred to nullification, secession, and (oh yeah) something called the Civil War. It didn't work then, and it won't work now (much as we'd like to wave the wingnuts in Texas bye-bye and send them to Cuba for a real taste of socialism).
It's not a coincidence that this talk wasn't heard beyond Aryan Nation or KKK rallies up until a few years ago. Funny how the talk of secession started gaining momentum after the election of the first black President. Let's remind ourselves that what's being suggested here is turning on your country, or in language even a Texas wingnut can understand, treason.
