One of the most successful disinformation campaigns in the past decade has been that of the climate change deniers. The self-serving purveyors of the fiction that the case for climate change has not been made -- primarily the fossil fuel industry -- were dealt another blow last week when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a report that pointed to a number of alarming trends indicating that the global climate is warming: melting of the polar ice caps, record droughts and extreme heat, and rising ocean levels. The panel's ominous conclusion was that we're quickly running out of time to curb the greenhouse gases that are causing the warming of the earth's atmosphere. The "debate" the fossil fuel industry wants to concoct over climate change is becoming a debate over whether their profits will trump having a livable planet.
