Will Banning The Name Work?
Washington's football team owner and boys' clothing customer Li'l Danny Snyder may have another serious challenge to his team's offensive name. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will take up a petition by a law professor at George Washington University to ban radio and TV stations from using the derogatory name in their broadcasts. FCC Chairman Tim Wheeler, who has called the team's name "offensive and derogatory," said the Commission's board would take the matter up. The petition cites the FCC's authority to regulate "profane language," but would not require Li'l Danny to change the team's name. However, if radio and TV stations are prohibited from using the name on the air, it could have serious economic impacts on the football franchise, something that the money-grubbing Li'l Danny takes very seriously, certainly more than offending the first Americans.
We again challenge anyone to go to a large meeting or convention of Native American tribes, and solely use the offensive name in addressing them collectively or individually. Can't imagine doing that? Neither can we.
