In commemoration of November 11, 1918 (Armistice Day, now Veterans Day in the United States), 888,246 ceramic poppies were installed in the moat of the Tower of London, signifying the number of British Commonwealth soldiers, sailors and airmen killed in World War I. A stunning reminder of the enormous waste of human life in that war, and all wars.
