Goodbye, At Long Last
After 54 years, the Confederate battle flag of treason and racism came down the flagpole this morning on the South Carolina State Capitol grounds, where it has been a symbol of division and defiant racism for over 5 decades. It received an undeservedly respectful send off, as South Carolina state police marched in unison out to the flagpole and lowered the flag. The large crowd chanted "USA, USA" and "na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!" as the flag was lowered.
The long-overdue removal was triggered by the June 17 massacre of nine African-Americans in their Bible study group in church by a rebel flag-flaunting white supremacist, and by the restrained and graceful response by the families of the victims to the murder of their loved ones.
