Galt's Goober

There's an interesting report that the right-wing's bête noire, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl who walked away from his post in Afghanistan in 2009, has indicated to Army investigators that he's a big fan of the late right-wing Social Darwinist Ayn Rand (Paul Ryan? Rand Paul?  Comment?).  He's apparently told those investigators that he "identifies" with the likes of John Galt, Rand's fictional character in her novel Atlas Shrugged, who wandered out of society (i.e. "the takers") to form a proto-sociopathic community of his own (i.e., "the makers") in "Galt's Gulch."

Bergdahl, described by the Army investigators as "sincere," but "delusional," was held by the Taliban for three years and freed in a prisoner exchange for five Taliban prisoners. The right-wing has been fiercely critical of Bergdhal for deserting his post and furious at President Obama for arranging the prisoner swap. But then, when someone feels no obligation to his fellow citizens, and wanders off to pursue his own selfish interests, it should come as no surprise that he's been drinking that Randian Kool Aid.
