Yesterday, the voters of Virginia's 13th district elected Danica Roem, the nation's first transgender woman to be elected to a state legislature, by a wide margin. She defeated notorious right-wing bigot Del. Robert Marshall, who called himself "Virginia's Chief Homophobe" and who had introduced the "bathroom bill" in the state legislature that failed in committee. His campaign was relentlessly crude and ugly toward Roem, whom he refused to debate or shake hands with. In her victory remarks, Roem spoke movingly:
“To every person who’s ever been singled out, who’s ever been stigmatized, who’s ever been the misfit, who’s ever been the kid in the corner, who’s ever needed someone to stand up for them when they didn’t have a voice of their own. This one is for you.”It's for all of us.
