DC Awaits Tomorrow's Nazi / KKK Rally
Several hundred Nazis and other alt-right white supremacist racists are expected to converge on Washington, DC tomorrow for a "Unite the Right 2" rally, one year after their violent riot in Charlottesville, VA resulted in the murder of counter-protester Heather Heyer. The racist cretins will be assembling in Lafayette Park across from the north portico of the White (Supremacist) House. Their leader, co-conspirator and bigot Donald "Rump" Trump, will be hiding at his golf club in Bedminster, NJ as the rally of his "very fine people" occurs in Washington.
A couple of thousand counter-protesters are expected to oppose the white supremacists, made up of members of the ANSWER Coalition, Black Lives Matter, and other groups. DC's Metropolitan Police force will be out in force to maintain the peace. Many downtown restaurants have declared that they will ban the Nazis from their establishments or close early, and Airbnb, Uber and Lyft have announced that they will allow their participants to deny service to the white supremacist marchers.
One question that hasn't been adequately answered is why the U.S. Park Service issued a permit to the Nazis and KKK marchers to begin with. Freedom of assembly? That doesn't include marches and rallies with the express purpose of instigating violence of the type we saw in Charlottesville in August 2017. Fear of offending Rump's "very fine people?" These aren't silly Tea Baggers with their "don't tax me, tax thee" sentiments. There's a limit to freedom of assembly when it impacts public health and safety, and if there were ever a textbook case of denying a permit, this was one. If there is bloodshed, the Park Service will have a lot of explaining to do.
