Among the first bills that House Dems are queuing up now that they are in the majority is one that has special resonance with Dems. H.R. 8, a bill that would require universal background checks for gun sales, will be introduced next Tuesday, the eighth anniversary of former Dem Rep. Gabby Giffords' shooting in Tucson. Six were killed in the rampage, and 15 wounded at a Giffords appearance on that day. House Dems will have Giffords and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) introduce the bill. Roughly 20% of gun sales don't go through background checks, so that even people on the terrorist no-fly list can purchase a firearm without fear of detection.

I believe the NRA is suffering some financial hits and I hope they lose lobbying power as a result. If we can continue to shine a light on their big contributors and their bullying tactics, and maybe if kids like the survivors of the Parkland shooting and others like Gabby Giffords put a face on the victims of mass shootings, then changes can happen.
