After suffering two back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes in October 2017, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has struggled to recover, experiencing massive housing dislocations, electric grid destruction and food and medicine shortages. Roughly 3,000 deaths from the hurricanes were reported, and yet demagogue and malignant narcissist Donald "Rump" Trump is opposed to giving needed assistance to our fellow Americans apparently because they've been ungrateful for his generous gift of paper towels. His regime's delayed response to the disaster in Puerto Rico has been widely deemed a failure.
Earlier this year, Rump had attempted to cut off Federal disaster aid to Puerto Rico, lying that the island's government was intending to use the aid for its debt, and trying to shift the funds to the Rump-friendly states of Florida and Texas. Yesterday, a Senate bill that limited relief to Puerto Rico to food stamps was rejected along party lines.
It's going to be very difficult to get Rump and his Rethuglican cult on board with any additional aid to Puerto Rico, given their animosity and prejudice. It's going to take increasing pressure on them in Congress, and a massive voter turnout in States with a significant Puerto Rican presence. That said, sadly, for many of our fellow citizens, it will be too little, too late.
BONUS: This morning on MSNBC, White (Supremacist) House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan "Diddley" Gidley referred to Puerto Rico several times as "that country." These people are nothing but callous, ignorant bigots.
