"Nothing Left To Lose": Moms Vs. The NRA

As are the rest of us, Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, is watching the National Rifle Rampage Association's vile toad Wayne LaPierre jerk the chain of his employee Donald "Very Stable Genius" Trump, causing him to take expanded background checks for gun sales off the table. That will assure that the Rethuglican-controlled Senate, led by Sen. #Massacre Mitch McConnell, will take a hard pass on any meaningful gun safety legislation. All this, despite the fact that 90% of the public -- including a majority of NRA members -- want expanded background checks to help weed out domestic terrorists and other mentally unstable and criminal people. The polling on enacting gun safety measures among suburban women spells big trouble for the Trumpian Rethuglican Party.

Meanwhile, March For Our Lives, founded by survivors of the 2018  massacre at Parkland, Florida's Majory Stoneman Douglas High School, yesterday released details of a 6-point plan to reduce gun violence ("Peace Plan For America"). They intend to make gun violence and the Rethuglicans who are in the NRA's pocket a major issue in 2020 up and down the ballot, and are pushing for automatic voter registration for 18 year-olds. The issue made a big impact for Dems in 2018, especially with suburban moms, and with Trump and his party in the thrall of the NRA, will undoubtedly be one again in 2020.

Until we weaken the grip that the NRA has on the Republican party or they self-destruct, new gun legislation will remain dead in the water. Everything comes down to money and who has the most, but if we voters can raise enough dollars to weaken the NRA and defeat them in Congress, there might be a weakening. Protests help, but we have to constantly let our representatives know that guns are the reason for the mass murder of our families.

I contact my Senator regularly and he responds with thoughtful, honest answers. Sherrod Brown is one of the best, and I hope other citizens take the time to tell their representatives what their issues are and get the responses I get. They need to know how we feel.

Every front. Attack on every front, every angle for gun regulation.

donnah -- It's a promising development that the internal corruption and backstabbing in the NRA is weakening it and causing big financial and credibility problems. Hope that trend continues until its ultimate demise. And we agree that Sherrod Brown is one of the best!
