QOTD: "Can't Get Past That Stuff"

I have a brother-in-law who has autism, and [Trump] is a guy that mocked a disabled reporter. How would I explain that to him that I hung out with somebody who mocked the way that he talked, or the way that he moves his hands? I can’t get past that stuff.” -- World Champion Washington Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle, explaining why he won't attend the White (Supremacist) House event on Monday so Trump can have his photo op. Several players are said to be considering following Doolittle's example. It's hard to fathom why anyone, especially the Latino players, would want to be in the same vicinity as Trump.

Trump was lustily booed a week ago at Nats Park, with the crowd chanting "lock him up." That should give the players a clue about what to do.

  1. I'm totally supportive of sports teams who opt out of these White House publicity stunts. They are self promotion for Trump while embarrassing for the teams. When I saw that humiliating spread of fast food the first time, I was mortified. And it really is an insult to athletes and other award-winners. Too bad that others on the team will attend.

  2. I'm a Nats fan. Sean Doolittle's decision, quite aside from his relative's disability is not surprising. He is actually active in NGOs and liberal causes. I imagine he finds Trump appalling. The Lerners who own the Nats vote Democratic and I would imagine they would not pressure the team to attend one way or another. Dave Martinez is Puerto Rican ancestry and after the disgusting way Trump behaved towards that Commonwealth I wouldn't be surprised if he abstained. But who knows? Sports people are often conservative maybe less so nowadays.

  3. donnah & Jimbo -- Doolittle stepped forward and publicly announced his decision, so it's entirely possible that others will simply not show up. We hope so, because the Nats are beloved in the "DMV."
