QOTD: Protest, Then Vote (UPDATED)

"So the bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both. We have to mobilize to raise awareness, and we have to organize and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform." -- former President Barack Obama, stressing the need to both mobilize and vote, not only in presidential elections, but at the state and local level where the people who are able to carry out police reform are elected.  As you might expect, the full op/ ed is worth the read, with the added feature of demonstrating how tragically far we've fallen in our choice of leaders.

UPDATEPresident Obama will take part in a town hall event to discuss the George Floyd killing and the subsequent unrest in the country, along with former AG Eric Holder and other police reform advocates.  The event starts at 5 p.m. today, and is being aired on his Obama Foundation website.

Voting is what will save the country.

Also, in the meantime, call or email your state representatives. My Ohio Republican Senator is Rob Portman, who when pressed for an answer about Trump's ridiculous photo op, scurried by and said he was late for lunch. What an embarrassment! So I emailed him and told him that his cowardice does not solve our problems. He acted like a coward and because he has not made a moral stand against Trump, and he is not representing our state or it's citizens. I told him I was disappointed and angry and that he needs to do his job and stop cowering under Trump.

I also write to my wonderful Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, and tell him that I support him and encourage him to keep working for us. His wife Connie Schultz is on Twitter and I send her messages as well. Tell your representatives how you feel and what you want them to do. That's why they're there. And we can make a difference. More now than ever, we must be heard.
