D.C. On Edge After 18-Year-Old Shot By Police
Demonstrators congregated at a D.C. Metropolitan police precinct near where an 18-year-old African-American youth was shot and killed by police yesterday afternoon. The police were responding to reports of a car with guns inside. The police are saying that body cam video worn by two pursuing officers indicates the youth had a weapon drawn when he was shot. Marchers also marched to the home of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to demand an investigation.
Some residents' accounts of the shooting differ from the police. A law passed by the D.C. City Council this summer requires the police to release body cam videos involving a shooting within 5 business days, unless the victim's family objects.
Records indicate the D.C. Metropolitan police have shot a total of four people this year, with yesterday's victim being the sole fatality.
