"End Our National Crisis"

Of course, that the New York Times isn't supporting Donald "COVID Donnie" Trump comes as no surprise. But the editorial board has issued a blistering salvo that lays out "The Case Against Donald Trump" with special clarity and comprehensiveness (this is only the opening of the editorial;  there's the rest of "the case" at the link):

Donald Trump’s re-election campaign poses the greatest threat to American democracy since World War II.

Mr. Trump’s ruinous tenure already has gravely damaged the United States at home and around the world. He has abused the power of his office and denied the legitimacy of his political opponents, shattering the norms that have bound the nation together for generations. He has subsumed the public interest to the profitability of his business and political interests. He has shown a breathtaking disregard for the lives and liberties of Americans. He is a man unworthy of the office he holds.

The editorial board does not lightly indict a duly elected president. During Mr. Trump’s term, we have called out his racism and his xenophobia. We have critiqued his vandalism of the postwar consensus, a system of alliances and relationships around the globe that cost a great many lives to establish and maintain. We have, again and again, deplored his divisive rhetoric and his malicious attacks on fellow Americans. Yet when the Senate refused to convict the president for obvious abuses of power and obstruction, we counseled his political opponents to focus their outrage on defeating him at the ballot box

Nov. 3 can be a turning point. This is an election about the country’s future, and what path its citizens wish to choose.

The resilience of American democracy has been sorely tested by Mr. Trump’s first term. Four more years would be worse.

But even as Americans wait to vote in lines that stretch for blocks through their towns and cities, Mr. Trump is engaged in a full-throated assault on the integrity of that essential democratic process. Breaking with all of his modern predecessors, he has refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, suggesting that his victory is the only legitimate outcome, and that if he does not win, he is ready to contest the judgment of the American people in the courts or even on the streets.

This is yet another of the "first drafts of history" that will stand as a repudiation of the worst president in American history and his rotted out party. Worth the read.

It will be interesting to see how many rats leap off the USS Trump if he loses. It's encouraging to see the NYT editorial board go full-tilt against him, but Republicans have always claimed it was a Liberal paper. And there are writers for the Times who are definitely still in Trump's camp.

I will be thrilled to see him taken down.

donnah- A lot of Trump staffers are suddenly concerned about "Trump stink" on their resumes! A little too late for that! WTF have they been observing the last 4 years?

The Times, for better or worse, is considered the "paper of record" and broadsides like this, perhaps springing from some belated guilt about their 2016 coverage, tend to be opinion- setters in historical narratives.

The problems will continue after chump loses.
- The 28% loyal, brain-dead cultists will not go away quietly.
- every repuke that loses now has the encouragement to challenge their own defeats.
- chump may move to Russia to avoid lawsuits.
- the deficit has tripled in 1 year and will need to be addressed even in a morbid econony.

To the vets & active duty armed forces: you are Cherished and NOT suckers and losers.

Perhaps the "I vas only following orders" defense might work. Does Argentina have an extradition treaty? Maybe they could dust off the playbook that got Dr. Mengele into South America along with some of his friends. And the real 'muricans could await the return. "Tonight on Hannity is America's real president planning a return? Hannity reveals the truth!!!! " "Gladys hurry up Hannity is starting!!!"

We'll need to get taxes on the wealthy and corporations back up where they were under Reagan or even where they were under Eisenhower (when the economy was really booming). If they flee abroad, seize their assets here. Nationalize Amazon if we have to. We can't afford to pussyfoot around with the 1% any longer. They've made out like bandits during the pandemic while everyone else suffered, and it's about time they started paying their share of the costs of what had to be done.

Trumpanzees won't listen to the NYT, but if they haven't been swayed by everything that's happened in the last four years, they're hopeless. One-third of our population being stupid and insane is a big problem, but it's a manageable one as long as they're disconnected from national political power.
