Mid-Week Birthday Song

He's one of Bob Dylan's favorite songwriters, and his songs have been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand,  Eric Clapton, John Mellencamp,  Peter, Paul and Mary, and The Grateful Dead. Folk-rock legend Gordon Lightfoot turned 82 yesterday, and he's Canada's great gift to music. HIs string of iconic songs, from "Early Morning Rain," to "Sundown," "Carefree Highway," and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," have stood the test of time. So has his signature song, 1971's "If You Could Read My Mind," which he performed live on "The Midnight Special" in 1974. Enjoy.

  1. I've loved Gordon Lightfoot for ages. He has a voice and style that are unique and he's written so many beautiful songs. “.The Circle is Small” and “Daylight Katy” are two of my favorites, but I love just about all.

Many years ago, my aunt and I got tickets to see him perform in a small local outdoor venue. We were concerned about the weather, as storms were predicted for the evening, but we braved it anyway. It started raining about halfway through, but Gordon was under an overhang and he kept on singing. i have to admit, the thunder and pouring rain made The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald very, very realistic!
