The farce that's unfolded in Arizona with the partisan Republican "audit" of Maricopa County's 2.1 million ballots has become a national joke, with conspiracy-minded wingnuts looking a ballots for signs of Chinese bamboo, etc. One of the counters, naturally, was a participant in the January 6 Capitol insurrection. and the company managing the farce is led by a Big Lie Trumper. After the state's Republican-majority Senate ordered up the sideshow to apparently further Dear Leader's Big Lie about a rigged election, thereby soothing his fragile ego, the started to fall apart, with only 10 percent of the ballots counted after a couple of weeks, meaning it would take August to complete.
Some Republicans in Arizona are getting nervous about being associated with the Kool Aid Kids searching the ballots for secret messages or bamboo particles. One in particular, human weathervane and Republican state Sen. Paul Boyer, has been trying to distance himself from the disaster he helped to create, but it's not escaping notice:
"Either Boyer is that naïve or somebody twisted his arm to support auditing Maricopa County’s 2.1 million ballots. Boyer, who never actually voted for the audit as I initially wrote, told me he believed there was nothing wrong in principle with auditing the county’s vote
Either way, Boyer doesn’t get to wash his hands of this farce and expect roaring applause for simply disowning his initial support while still doing nothing to stop it. [snip]
Boyer himself got caught in the public’s wrath earlier this year when he was the sole Republican speaking up against putting Maricopa County supervisors behind bars over the audit.
Some thought then, including myself, that Boyer was perhaps the only sensible Republican who could stop this madness.
We were wrong. He didn’t have the guts to do it.
Indeed, he was the sole Republican to vote against holding the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in contempt for not responding to subpoenas. But in the end, Boyer supported in principle to move ahead with the audit." (our emphasis)
With convictions like that, it's not surprising that the rotted out Republican / Trumpist Party has the likes of cowardly "Hollow Man" Rep. Kevin McCarthy as a "leader."
