Video: Locating The Graves of the Enslaved

Take a few minutes to view this compelling video about the search for unmarked graves of enslaved people in Louisiana. Aided by historical maps, aerial photos and geologic scanning technology, a research organization, Forensic Architecture, used "cartographic regression" to record the changes in land areas to identify possible burial sites.

Darryl Hambrick of the River Road African American Museum and his sister Kathe have made the discovery of these graves a 30-year project. As he movingly says about the enslaved peoples' graves:

"On a plantation, this was your freedom. You didn't get freedom until you were dead in the grave."
