One of Britain's first super groups, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, was one of the earliest masters of what became known as "progressive rock," characterized by elaborate, often long symphonic compositions, featuring such instruments as Moog synthesizers and poetic lyrics. Their 1970 hit, "Lucky Man," is a dirge-like song that looks at war's noble myths. Made up of the late Keith Emerson (whose birthday was yesterday) on keyboards, Greg Lake on guitar, and Carl Palmer on drums / percussion, the original band split apart in 1979.
