Sunday Reflection

"This is the consequence of a body that wants to suppress not just our vote, but the votes of our districts that are majority Black and brown. I represent one of the most diverse districts in Tennessee, and so now those 78,000 people have been silenced." -- Tennessee state representative Justin Jones after being voted out of the state legislature for demonstrating for gun safety.

“Let’s understand the underlying issue is about fighting for the safety of our children. It’s been years now where they are taught to read and write and hide in a closet and be quiet if there’s a mass shooter at their school, where our children, who have God’s capacity to learn and lead, who go to school in fear.” -- Vice President Harris on Friday in Nashville, addressing the issue of gun safety which precipitated the demonstrations and expulsions.

“Today’s expulsion of lawmakers who engaged in peaceful protest is shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent. Rather than debating the merits of the issue, these Republican lawmakers have chosen to punish, silence, and expel duly-elected representatives of the people of Tennessee,” -- President Biden on Thursday, commenting on the expulsion of the two black state representatives in Tennessee.

It's clear that the Republican / White Nationalist / Shooters party will never do anything that would upset their gun manufacturer overseers, much less discuss gun safety, even after a decades-long epidemic of mass shootings and public support for gun control measures. At the same time, they have to be petrified of the coming generation of fed-up young voters, who grew up with active shooter drills in their schools and are going to be voting in 2024 and beyond.
