Since 1981, a Soviet-era monument towered over Kyiv, brandishing a sword and a shield emblazoned with the hammer and sickle of the old Soviet Union. The "Mother Ukraine Monument" has just undergone a notable makeover: the old shield was replaced earlier today by one with Ukraine's trident symbol in a rebuke to the terrorist Russian state as it continues to attack civilian targets in Ukraine:
