"Fourteen years ago, when the big three automakers were struggling to stay afloat, my administration and the American people stepped in to support them. So did the auto workers in the UAW who sacrificed pay and benefits to help get the companies back on their feet. Now that our carmakers are enjoying robust profits, it’s time to do right by those same workers so the industry can emerge more united and competitive than ever." -- President Barack Obama, on Twitter / X, addressing the UAW strike for higher wages, decent pensions and other benefits.
Talks with the three major U.S. auto makers are reportedly underway, with the UAW saying that its talks with Ford were "reasonably productive." UAW members gave up pay and benefits 14 years ago to keep the auto maker afloat, and now that the industry is not only afloat but surging, that good faith act by auto workers should be repaid with a good contract.
