Sunday Reflection: "States Are Not Free..To Intimidate"

"The states are not free, under the guise of protecting maternal health or potential life, to intimidate women into continuing pregnancies."  Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun (11/12/1908 - 3/4/1999), in Thornburgh vs. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 1986, which held that Pennsylvania's "Abortion Control Act of 1982" promoted biased anti-abortion information to be given to a pregnant women to discourage them from having an abortion.

Justice Blackmun also wrote the majority opinion for Roe v. Wade in 1973, establishing himself as an early champion of womens' reproductive rights. The public's votes in the past two years have established that Justice Blackmun was on the right side of history, preserving the rights of Americans to their most intimate decisions in the face of intrusive Christofascists.
