After numerous endorsements and pledges from state delegations to the Dem convention, Vice President Kamala Harris has more than enough delegates to secure her nomination formally at the Democratic National Convention in August. From CNN's report:
"She’s been backed by well more than the 1,976 pledged delegates needed to win the nomination on the first ballot, according to CNN’s delegate estimate — a moment that arrived on the first full day of her campaign.
And with no credible challenger emerging the day after President Joe Biden announced his exit from the race and endorsed his vice president, it was already clear that the biggest remaining question about the 2024 Democratic ticket is who Harris will choose as her running mate.
Harris, who will hold a campaign event in Milwaukee on Tuesday, staked her claim to the party’s standard-bearer role with an electric speech Monday evening, as she visited the campaign’s headquarters in Delaware." (our emphasis)
In that speech Monday evening, Harris set the stage for the coming "prosecutor versus felon" campaign theme, saying:
“Predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type.”
Harris has proven to be a fundraising powerhouse, setting a one-day record for grass roots contributions of $81 million for her campaign. The Dem super PAC Future Forward reported commitments of $150 million from donors who previously were unsure of President Biden or were noncommittal.
Major endorsements flooded in for Harris starting Sunday evening and continuing for the next day, with endorsements from the powerful AFL-CIO and member unions, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The party has set August 7 as the date by which the nomination will be settled, likely through a "virtual" nomination and roll call vote.
