50 Years Ago Today: Nixon Resigns

The Malignant Loser's Republican predecessor- in- crime, Richard M. Nixon resigned the Presidency 50 years ago today at noon, Eastern, after being told he would face certain impeachment and removal from office due to the Watergate scandal.  Here's his letter of resignation (click to enlarge):

Vice President Gerald Ford, upon taking the oath of office that day, said "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over."  What he couldn't foresee is that we have recurring nightmares in America, like the long one we've been living through for nearly a decade.

I remember that day well. I was working as assistant manager in a hardware store in a prosperous suburb of Boston. Very Republican town.

The manager and I heard the news on the radio. We were both thrilled.

Just then a suburban housewife came in. Due to the politics of the town, the manager and I kept quiet. The customer could tell we were buzzed about something though, and asked what it was.We told her Nixon announced he was leaving office.

She immediately smiled broadly and said "That's great!" She left to spread the news.

You never can tell.
