One of the most compelling and popular voices of the 1970s, Roberta Flack, passed away at the age of 88 on Monday, leaving behind a legion of fans and a discography that will be heard for generations. She graduated from Howard University in Washington, and was "discovered" by musician Les McCann as she performed at Mr. Henry's on Capitol Hill. Her first hit, Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1973, which she followed with "Killing Me Softly With His Song," winning the following year's Grammy for Record of the Year, the first time an artist has won two years consecutively. She had other hits like "Where Is The Love" with Donny Hathaway (Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance/Duo 1973), and "Feel Like Makin' Love." In remembrance of her, two of her most popular songs are our choices today.
