Last Friday's release of Mayhem, Lady Gaga's first solo album since Chromatica in 2020 has received widespread praise for its musicality and mix of pop musical styles and genres. Metacritic's aggregated reviews gave it the highest rated album of her career. Coming off of her soundtrack albums (e.g., Harlequin) and her collaboration with the legendary Tony Bennett (e.g., Love for Sale), Mayhem was teased by the release of two tracks from the album, "Disease" and "Abracadabra." A progressive advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and the environment, Gaga has raised millions for disaster relief and COVID-19 relief, among other causes.
Today we have two tracks which are widely seen as influenced by her fiancé Michael Polanski, who co-produced Mayhem, "Vanish Into You" and "Blade of Grass."
I don't pay much attention to current popular music...my go-to radio station is oldies (50s, 60s, 70s). I am a diehard SNL fan and I give every musical act a chance, but few make the cut and I just grit my teeth until they end. (I've become the same geezer my Dad was..."doesn't anybody just sing songs anymore?!") 😳 But, Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra" on SNL this weekend was compelling and held me for the entire song...wow, I'm her fan now! 🤗
