Showing once again that he has terrible political instincts and no clue what he's up against in the Malignant Fascist's assault on American democracy, California Gov. Gavin "Podcast" Newsom reacted to the MF's bizarre tariffs- on- foreign- produced- movies with a gushing proposal:
“America continues to be a film powerhouse, and California is all in to bring more production here. Building on our successful state program, we’re eager to partner with the Trump administration to further strengthen domestic production and Make America Film Again.” (our emphasis)
"Make America Film Again." Nice appropriation and amplification of the MF's MAGA slogan! Perhaps that and your over- eager let's make a deal willingness to take the MF's bait was just a bit too clever and premature. Said the MF:
"What they’ve done is other nations have been stealing the movies, the moviemaking capabilities from the United States,” he said, adding: “I’ve done some very strong research over the past week, and we’re making very few movies now. Hollywood is being destroyed. Now, you have a…grossly incompetent governor that allowed that to happen, so I’m not just blaming other nations, but other nations have stolen our movie industry. If they’re not willing to make a movie inside the United States, then we should have a tariff on movies that come in. And not only that, governments are actually giving big money. They’re supporting them financially. That’s sort of a threat to our country in a sense.” (our emphasis)
Playing the MF's game on his turf with his rules is a lose-lose situation for Democrats. Rather than calling out the harebrained and legally dubious tariff "idea" for what it is, Newsom engages and gives it authenticity by announcing "we're eager to partner with the Trump administration." FFS, if that's not political malpractice, we don't know what is.
It doesn't give us pleasure in pointing out the deficiencies of some in our Democratic Party establishment's approach to the existential threat of the MF. But if these folks keep acting like it's business- as- usual and can't recognize and actively fight a threat so imminent and palpable as the one we're facing right now, they have self- selected out of any current or future leadership of the party or the country. Period.
Fighters, not huggers.

I've been looking askance at Newsom but am beginning to notice a pattern: the things he seems to be acquiescing to are the most ridiculous of utterings. It could be he's masterfully trolling ...
