One of Chicago's (and America's) grandest movie palaces, the Spanish Renaissance- style Uptown, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its opening on August 18. While it closed in 1981, its owners and the community are determined to save it so it can be an entertainment venue in the future, despite continuing financing and political difficulties. To coin a cliche, they don't build them like that anymore.
