The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

The mayor of Chicago has signed an executive order outlining how the city will attempt to resist Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Brandon Johnson pushed back on Saturday against what he called the “out-of-control” Trump administration’s plan to deploy large numbers of federal officers into the country’s third-largest city, which could take place within days.

The Chicago police department will be barred from helping federal authorities with civil immigration enforcement or any related patrols, traffic stops and checkpoints during the surge, according to the executive order Johnson signed.

The mayor directed all city departments to guard the constitutional rights of Chicago residents “amidst the possibility of imminent militarized immigration or national guard deployment by the federal government”.

When asked during a news conference about federal agents who are presumably “taking orders”, Johnson replied: “Yeah, and I don’t take orders from the federal government.”

Johnson also blocked Chicago police from wearing face coverings to hide their identities, as most federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officers have adopted since the Trump administration took charge this year.  [snip]

Johnson had harsh words for Trump during his news conference, accusing the president of “behaving outside the bounds of the constitution” and seeking a federal presence in blue cities as retribution against his political rivals.

“He is reckless and out of control,” Johnson said. “He’s the biggest threat to our democracy that we’ve experienced in the history of our country.”  [snip]

The Trump administration has been working on plans to send the national guard to Chicago, something Johnson and JB Pritzker, the governor of Illinois, have said would be an abuse of power.

On Friday, Pritzker said such a move would amount to an “invasion”. He told CBS News that, should Trump send in the national guard, voters “should understand that he has other aims, other than fighting crime”.

Pritzker said those aims may be to “stop the elections in 2026 or, frankly, take control of those elections”...

Gov. Pritzker has it absolutely right. The Malignant Fascist is targeting cities run by Democrats purely for the purpose of intimidating the population and setting the stage for a takeover of the election process in those areas in 2026 and beyond.  It's good that, for the first time, the Malignant Fascist and his regime of third- rate mini- tyrants are getting hard resistance to their un- democratic, un- American plans.

The bad:

Mutual trust and respect must guide India-China relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Chinese President Xi Jinping as the two leaders met on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China's port city of Tianjin on Sunday.

The closely watched bilateral began with a firm handshake, signalling the next step in rapprochement between the two long-time rivals while also sending a message to US President Donald Trump, whose tariff offensive has soured Washington’s ties with both New Delhi and Beijing.

During the hour-long meeting, PM Modi underlined recent progress in bilateral ties, from an agreement between special representatives on the border standoff, to the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the restoration of direct flights between the two countries.

"The interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked to our cooperation. This will also pave the way for the welfare of the entire humanity," the Prime Minister said.

"We are committed to taking our relations forward on the basis of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity," he added.

The Prime Minister noted that India and China both pursue strategic autonomy, and their relations should not be seen through a third country lens, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a readout.

The two leaders also deemed it necessary to expand common ground on bilateral, regional, and global issues and challenges, like terrorism and fair trade in multilateral platforms, it said.

Xi, on his part, welcomed PM Modi and called New Delhi a "vital friend" of Beijing. He stated that the two nations must handle their relationship "from a strategic and long-term perspective"...

India is being driven into the arms of China by the Malignant Fascist's tariffs (50%!), a blunder of catastrophic strategic significance.  And what caused the MF to jack up India's tariff rate?  His pique at Prime Minister Modi refusing to join Pakistan in nominating him for a Nobel Peace Prize for "ending" the India-Pakistan border war (he didn't, of course).  The fucking fool will ruin this country faster than any of us would have predicted.

The ugly:

Florida could be on the hook for $218 million the state spent to convert a remote training airport in the Everglades into an immigration detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”

The center may soon be completely empty as a judge upheld her decision late Wednesday ordering operations to wind down indefinitely.

Shutting down the facility for the time being would cost the state $15 million to $20 million immediately, and it would cost another $15 million to $20 million to reinstall structures if Florida is allowed to reopen it, according to court filings by the state.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management will lose most of the value of the $218 million it has invested in making the airport suitable for a detention center, a state official said in court papers.

Built in just a few days, the facility consists of chain-link cages surrounding large white tents filled with rows of bunk beds.

An Associated Press analysis of publicly available state spending data showed that Florida has signed at least $405 million in vendor contracts to build and operate the facility, which officials had initially estimated would cost $450 million a year to run. A previous AP review found that as of late July, the state had already allocated at least $245 million to run the site, which opened July 1...

Congratulations to the Republican stewards of Florida's tax dollars!  To burn $218 million in a matter of weeks (with more waste to come?) is reaching DOGE-like levels of incompetence and mindlessness.  Florida Gov. Ron "Bootsie" DeSantis, in his rush to get in on the Malignant Fascist's performative cruelty of sprinkling gulags across the American landscape, comes off as a particularly ineffective butt snorkeler trying to please his former antagonist, who used to call him "Tiny D."  ETTD.
