The Big Sweep

Voters across the country delivered a strong message, maybe several, to the Malignant Fascist and his rotted out party/ cult:

New Jersey

Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill was elected on Tuesday to be the 57th governor of New Jersey, defeating Jack Ciattarelli, a former state representative and Republican, in a race that suggested the resilience of the party after Donald Trump’s return to office.

The Associated Press called the race for Sherrill, a 53-year-old congresswoman from New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, just two hours after polls closed.

“I hear you, Jersey,” Sherrill said Tuesday night at her election party in East Brunswick, after walking out to a cheering crowd and Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run. “Good government doesn’t just manage problems, it solves them.”

The contest – one of only two gubernatorial races this year – drew national attention as a potential preview for what’s to come in the 2026 midterms and an early gauge of Trump’s standing with voters...

Virginia

Democrat Abigail Spanberger has been elected Virginia’s first female governor as her party racked up victories in key elections across the southern state.

An ex-CIA and federal law enforcement officer who served three terms in the US House of Representatives after flipping a GOP-held district, Spanberger was leading the state’s Republican lieutenant governor Winsome Earle-Sears 57% to 43%, with 89% of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press.

“We sent a message to every corner of the commonwealth, a message to our neighbors and our fellow Americans across the country,” Spanberger told supporters gathered at a convention center in the state capital, Richmond.

“We sent a message to the whole world that in 2025, Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship. We chose our commonwealth over chaos.” [snip]

The AP reported that Ghazala Hashmi, a state Democratic senator, won the lieutenant governor’s race, becoming the first Muslim woman elected to a statewide office in the United States. Jay Jones, a Democratic former state delegate, ousted Jason Miyares, the Republican attorney general, even after the former’s campaign was rocked by the emergence of text message in which Jones mused about about a political rival receiving “two bullets to the head”.

And state Democrats appear on course to greatly expand their one-seat majority in the house of delegates. Though ballot counting was ongoing, they appeared to have flipped several Republican held districts in the 100-seat chamber....  (our emphasis)

New York City

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani was elected on Tuesday as the 111th mayor of New York City, defeating the former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and making history as the city’s first Muslim mayor.

The 34-year-old democratic socialist and state assembly member from Queens, secured victory with more than 50% of the vote. Cuomo, 67, finished second with just over 40%, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received just over 7% of the vote...

California

Voters in California on Tuesday approved a high-stakes redistricting measure, a national triumph for Democrats hoping to stop Donald Trump and Republicans from retaining full control of the federal government in next year’s midterm elections.

It was a decisive victory for Democrats in deep-blue California, who had raced to counter a gerrymander in Texas, engineered at the US president’s behest, to carve out new safe Republican districts. The Associated Press declared Proposition 50 had passed almost instantly when polls closed statewide.

“We stood stood firm in response to Donald Trump’s recklessness, and tonight, after poking the bear, this bear roared with unprecedented turnout in a special election with an extraordinary result,” Gavin Newsom, the California governor, who spearheaded the initiative said in a speech at the Democratic party headquarters in Sacramento.

Celebrating the parade of Democratic victories across the country, Newsom added: “We are proud here in California to be part of this narrative this evening.”...

Pennsylvania

Three liberal justices won another 10-year term on the Pennsylvania supreme court, giving Democrats a key victory and allowing them to maintain their 5-2 advantage on a vital body that could issue important rulings on abortion and voting rights in an important battleground state in the coming years.

In Pennsylvania, supreme court justices are first elected in partisan elections and then voters get to decide whether to retain them every 10 years in contests that are technically non-partisan. Three justices – Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty and David Wecht – were elected as Democrats in 2015.

The court since then has played a major role in election disputes, striking down the state’s severely gerrymandered map in 2018 and ruling in favor of Pennsylvania voters in disputes about mail-in ballot rules...

Issues

Looking at those top issue numbers, it would appear voters are more concerned with the cost of food on the table and paying more for or losing their health care than they are about the MAGAt Republican- generated hategasm against immigrants and about crime (not) running rampant in our (not) burning cities.  You can bet, being the fascist cult that they are, they'll just double down.  After yesterday, we know we have the numbers to stop them and, hopefully, the courage, brains, and fortitude to do just that.

  2. Seafury -- really good news, especially looking at the non- marquee local races all over the country from Maine to Georgia to Mississippi etc. Hard to find any bad news for Dems today.

    1. 🥺 OK, I'll be the Debbie Downer (I live in Texas, whadda ya expect?!
🤬 TX voters passed every one of the 17 propositions put in front of them! Almost all of them give MAGA Gov. Greg Abbott and nasty AG Ken Paxton more power to screw up people's lives! Such as...Prop 15. only parents can decide for their children (so, no trans health allowed and religious schools get to steal from public funds); Prop 16. only citizens can vote (well, duh! This is just gonna allow for voter intimidation); Props 2 & 8. no taxes on capital gains or inherited estates (hooray for billionaires...again!); and Prop 12. GOP control of the commission to determine judicial misconduct (better ability to rid the state of judges who follow the rule of law!)!! 🤬💩☠️🤡
