The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The good:

...Paul Revere hung lanterns. Exactly 250 years later, retirees, pastors, and young activists roam the backwater subdivisions of Jefferson Parish with whistles hung around their necks. And Revere’s “One if by land, two if by sea,” has been updated by WhatsApp chat groups. They are guided by what the fiery Union Migrante organizer Rachel Taber told volunteers who packed the Mid-City church, that “the most dangerous thing we can do now is stay on our couch and do nothing while democracy falls apart.”

What’s so remarkable is that this insurgency is already claiming victories — making it much harder for ICE or Bovino and his green-clad squads to reach their absurd mass-deportation goal of arresting 1 million immigrants in Donald Trump’s first year. The movement’s most dramatic win, arguably, came in Manhattan in late November when protesters who had been tipped off about a planned ICE raid on Canal Street blockaded their parking garage, preventing their blitz.

But resistance is breaking out everywhere. In Minneapolis this week, a report of an active raid at the home of an East African refugee drew so many protesters so quickly that the agents left, making no arrest. In Charlotte, the Bovino-led operation dubbed “Charlotte’s Web,” which was also met with widespread community opposition, was abruptly cut short after just four-and-a-half days.  [snip]

[In New Orleans] The immigration-raid responders were a diverse lot — predominantly white but with a healthy smattering of African-Americans, with a strong contingent of retirement-age folks — much like the “No Kings” protests earlier this year — but also young liberals from this Democratic dot in a state that Trump won with 60% of the vote in 2024. Most told similar stories of outrage from watching stories and videos about deportation raids in Chicago or elsewhere, and feeling morally compelled to act. [snip]

The results can be powerful. Although dozens of immigrants have been arrested in the sweeps, “Catahoula Crunch” seems nowhere near its announced goal of detaining 5,000 people. The constant citizen watch-dogging forces Border Patrol to constantly shift tactics or keep moving to avoid angry crowds. From that rooftop in Kenner to the snowy streets of Minneapolis, citizen action has already spared an untold number of migrants from getting deported to their native countries in shackles... This is what we hope represents the true heart and soul of the majority of Americans.  Groups like Union Migrante and Indivisible are leading training sessions for people on how to resist the cruel and arbitrary ICE raids and arrests in their towns and cities (see "Ugly," below).  They've seen what's been going on and are repulsed by it and are doing what anyone with a moral compass would do. The more and sooner these goons are exposed and shamed, the better for our country.  Then, we start going up the chain of command...

The bad:

Russia has welcomed US President Donald Trump's new National Security Strategy, calling it "largely consistent" with Moscow's vision.

The 33-page document, unveiled by the US administration this week, suggests Europe is facing "civilisational erasure" and does not cast Russia as a threat to the US.

Combatting foreign influence, ending mass migration, and rejecting the EU's perceived practice of "censorship" are mentioned as other priorities in the report.

Several EU officials and analysts had pushed back on the strategy, questioning its focus on freedom of expression and likening it to language used by the Kremlin.

"The adjustments we're seeing... are largely consistent with our vision," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview published by Russia's state news agency Tass on Sunday.

"We consider this a positive step," he said, adding that Moscow would continue to analyse the document before drawing strong conclusions.

The strategy adopts a softer language towards Russia, which EU officials worry could weaken its stance towards Moscow as it pushes for an end to the war in Ukraine.

In the document, the EU is blamed for blocking US efforts to end the conflict and says that the US must "re-establish strategic stability to Russia" which would "stabilise European economies".

It appears to endorse efforts to influence policy on the continent, noting that US policy should prioritise "resistance to Europe's current trajectory within European nations".

The new report also calls for the restoration of "Western identity", and claims that Europe will be "unrecognisable in 20 years or less" and its economic issues are "eclipsed by the real and more stark prospect of civilisational erasure".

"It is far from obvious whether certain European countries will have economies and militaries strong enough to remain reliable allies," the document states.

In stark contrast, the document celebrates the influence of "patriotic European parties" and says "America encourages its political allies in Europe to promote this revival of spirit"...  (our emphasis)

This sickening display of fascist/ pro-Putin/ white ethno-nationalism should be repudiated by every patriotic American. Why, of course it's consistent with Russia's vision!  It's been directed by Russia-compromised Agent Krasnov and written by his treasonous minions (Vance?  Stephen Miller?  "Dim Philby" Witkoff?  Seb Gorka?  Tulsi Gabbard?  or other admirers of Putin's autocratic state?).  More polite reactions of some of our European allies:

In a social media post addressed to his "American friends", Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that "Europe is your closest ally, not your problem" and noted their "common enemies".

"This is the only reasonable strategy of our common security. Unless something has changed."

Meanwhile, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt wrote that the document "places itself to the right of the extreme right"...  (our emphasis)

Translation:  it's fascist.

The ugly:

Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington is calling for the release of Wilmer Toledo-Martinez, an immigrant who she says was mauled last month by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement attack dog in Vancouver, Washington.

According to Murray’s office, Toledo-Martinez is an immigrant with no criminal convictions, who came to the United States at 15 years old. His wife and three children—ages 2, 3, and 7, respectively—are all U.S. citizens.

On November 14, Toledo-Martinez reportedly answered a knock at his door to find a federal immigration agent posing as a construction worker, who claimed to have hit his car.

Toledo-Martinez went outside and was asked his name. When he turned to go inside to retrieve his insurance and ID, another agent is said to have released the dog, which bit him repeatedly, leaving injuries that were later captured in graphic images provided by Murray. His wife and two youngest children reportedly watched as this occurred.

In a video, seemingly taken moments after the attack, Toledo-Martinez is seen on the ground in handcuffs as an agent with a K9 stands over him. Another agent in a neon vest asks Toledo-Martinez his name before moving him into a truck.

On The Don Lemon Show, Toledo-Martinez’s lawyer, Olia Catala, said her client was denied immediate medical care. He was only later taken to a hospital, she said, after he begged them to do so and heard one of the agents say, “I’m not losing my job over this.”

To this day, Toledo-Martinez remains in Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington, according to Murray.

“This should shock the conscience of every one of us,” Murray said in a statement Friday. “I do not want to live in an America where federal agents can sic attack dogs on peaceful residents with impunity and face no consequences.”... (our emphasis)

They must, and we believe, will face consequences for their brutal, lawless tactics.  The culpability extends all the way up the chain of command, all the way to the (thanks to the lawless Republican Supreme Court) immunized Malignant Fascist.  We need to be as aggressive in seeking swift justice as these thugs and their superiors have been in evading it.
