Murder In Minneapolis: Reactions (UPDATED)

UPDATE:  The murdering ICE thug has been identified as Jonathan Ross.

The killing of an unarmed mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, at the hands of a murdering ICE thug in Minneapolis yesterday (see post below) has sparked nationwide protests and strong reactions from individuals and groups who see the country turning into a lawless police state.  This is just a sampling of those reactions.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) said that he has issued a “warning order” to prepare the Minnesota National Guard after a woman was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning.

Donald Trump and his administration may not care much about Minnesota — that’s been pretty evident — but we love this state,” Walz said at a Wednesday press conference. “We won’t let them tear us apart. We will not turn against each other.”  [snip]

“To Minnesotans, on the National Guard, they’re there to protect you and protect your constitutional rights,” Walz said. “These are our neighbors. They don’t wear masks. They don’t bust in from somewhere else. They’re not here to cause hassles to you or what we saw today, the tragedy.”  [snip]

“From here on, I have a very simple message: We do not need any further help from the federal government,” Walz said. “To Donald Trump and [Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough.”

The governor called on Americans to come together to confront the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in cities across the country.

“To Americans who are watching this, if you’re in Portland or you’re in LA, or you’re in Chicago, or you’re wherever they’re coming next, stand with us,” Walz said. “Stand with us against this.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey

The Minneapolis mayor told Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Wednesday to “get the f‑‑‑ out” of the city after a woman was fatally shot amid the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) immigration crackdown.

“We do not want you here,” Mayor Jacob Frey (D) said during a press conference. “Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite.

“People are being hurt,” he added. “Families are being ripped apart. Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy, are being terrorized, and now somebody is dead. That’s on you, and it’s also on you to leave.”  [snip]

“Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is bulls‑‑‑,” Frey said. “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.”...

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan

“ICE has committed an unspeakable act of violence today, shooting and killing a woman in South Minneapolis. These masked agents are out of control and creating real chaos in our state.

"ICE must leave Minnesota immediately – before more people are hurt. In the face of their violence, let us remain peaceful, calm, and united. Minnesotans will not allow Trump and his thugs to turn our communities into war zones.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar (DFL-MN)

"ICE’s actions today were unconscionable and reprehensible. I am beyond outraged that their reckless, callous actions led to the killing of a legal observer in Minneapolis.

"My heart breaks for the victim’s family, who will have to forever live with the pain caused by the Trump Administration's reckless and deadly actions. This administration has shown, yet again, that it does not care about the safety of Minnesotans. Instead of protecting our communities, they are unleashing violence–terrorizing neighborhoods and now killing a civilian.

"For weeks, ICE’s so-called ‘Operation Metro Surge’ has spread fear, chaos, and violence across our state. This is not law enforcement. It is state violence. It is simply indefensible, and ICE must be held accountable. That must include a full, comprehensive investigation and legal action against the agency."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday slammed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis.

“There’s no evidence that has been presented to justify the shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis. The so-called Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has zero credibility,” Jeffries told The Hill’s sister network NewsNation.

“She’s a stone-cold liar. We’ve got to make sure that the rogue ICE agent who pulled the trigger resulting in the death of an American citizen is criminally investigated to the full extent of the law,” he added...

ACLU

Today, ICE agents shot and killed an unarmed 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole Good, while she was in her car in a south Minneapolis neighborhood. The shooting happened a day after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that “the largest DHS operation ever is happening right now in Minnesota” and sent over 2,000 federal immigration officers into the state. The ACLU and ACLU of Minnesota strongly condemn this killing, and urge federal agents to withdraw from Minnesota as soon as possible and to halt these massive escalations across the country immediately...

National Nurses United Union

National Nurses United (NNU), the country’s largest nurses union, today expresses horror, sorrow, and condemnation following the fatal shooting by ICE in Minneapolis, Minnesota, issuing the following statement.

Union nurses across the country today mourn for a woman in Minnesota killed by federal agents in the latest escalation of violence from the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed an unarmed woman identified in news reports as Renee Good. NNU continues its demand to remove immigration enforcement agents from communities and demands justice for her death.

Armed federal agents on our streets and in our communities, not immigrant workers, are the biggest threat to our collective safety. Increased militarization of our neighborhoods actively endangers public health. These agents intimidate everyday people from going about their lives, whether that’s taking their kids to school, going to work, or coming to our hospitals. It’s an unacceptable situation that has created a public health crisis as people avoid seeking care. Nurses go into this work to take care of people and cannot stand by while violence and harm comes to the same people who come through our hospital doors...

...This is going to hurt Donald Trump and his party, politically. Even those Americans who would like to see more vigorous immigration enforcement did not have "kill a woman who is a mother and a citizen in cold blood" in mind. The "we need to be strong on immigration" segment of the voting public has been shrinking, according to polls, and the obvious reason is the harshness of the White House's policy. This killing is not going to help on that front. Meanwhile, American voters DO NOT LIKE IT when they feel that lawlessness has taken hold, and that the government is more a cause than a solution. Think about the election of 1968 (Vietnam/civil rights/Detroit Riot), for example, or the election of 1992 (Rodney King). While we might not see a George-Floyd-style response, we do not think this is going to fade from memory anytime soon.

We think it's clear beyond all doubt who the "domestic terrorists" are:  they're the Malignant Fascist and his regime of lawless thugs and their enablers in the rotted- out Republican cult.  They're the clear and present danger to our country and its domestic tranquillity.
