Mon Rovîa (born Janjay Lowe) takes his professional name from the city where he was born, Monrovia, Liberia. Musically, we'd say he occupies a fairly rare niche, it being described as "Afro-Appalachian" or "Affrilachian" music (think also Rhiannon Giddens and the Carolina Chocolate Drops). Here's "Heavy Foot" from his new album, "Bloodline." Hope you enjoy.
Love me now
Hold me down
And the government
Staying on heavy foot
And they tried to keep us all down
No they never gonna keep us all down
