The Los Angeles Aqueduct is a brilliant feat of civil engineering. But beyond its critical importance to the growth and sustainability of Los Angeles, this impressive human achievement came with a lot of downside. On the upside, by buying up all of the water from the Eastern Sierra and shipping it to LA, they kept the Owens Valley from becoming another sprawling mess of houses, etc.
